Keeping everyone safe online
The internet is powerful tool that is now part of everyone's everyday lives. It’s a resource for education, it offers a variety communication devices and is a research database to access information. New technologies such as AI (Artificial intelligence) will soon be a part of what we do on a daily basis and it is crucial that we prepare our learners for this.
In school, we run online safety assemblies, talk to learners about the impact of social media and influencers, and explain how to stay safe online. We believe in teaching learners about developments in technology and embracing these changes for their benefits, rather than restricting them from using different platforms.
It is equally important that parents/carers are aware of online dangers and know how to seek support, if required. UBHS is part of the National Online Safety platform and below are some tips on how to keep you and your child safe online:
- Make sure your child knows the person/people they are communicating with online when playing games/socializing
- Make sure your child’s identify is hidden online and they don’t give others their private information i.e. address, D.O.B, etc.
- Make sure they have a good digital footprint online. This means there is no information/images/videos of them online that could be considered harmful to them now or in the future
- Keep all settings private for all social media accounts and platforms i.e. everyone shouldn’t be able to see their information/images on Instagram, Facebook Snapchat, etc.
- Turn off location settings so that others can’t see where your child is on social media platforms
- Use official websites/platforms when searching for information as some information online isn’t always accurate or truthful.
