Through PSHCE learners develop their Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship skills. These are vital attributes that allow them to successfully manage their lives now and in the future. Through PSHCE learners will be able to develop the qualities needed to thrive as individuals and as members of society. PSHCE prepares learners to manage the critical opportunities and challenges that they will face at this crucial point in their lives. 

Outline of Course Content

PSHCE follows the following 3 areas:

  • Health and Wellbeing – healthy lifestyles, drugs, safety, crime and punishment.
  • Relationships – relationships with others, family, workplace.
  • Living in the Wider World – careers, personal finance, social skills, rights and responsibilities. 

Year 7 topics include:

  • Transition, friendship, tolerance and respect
  • Relationships and bullying
  • Emergency help and first aid
  • E-safety
  • Physical and mental health
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • British identity
  • UK Politics

Year 8 topics include:

  • Families and relationships
  • Consent
  • Prejudice and Discrimination
  • Mental health and self esteem
  • Drugs and legal highs
  • Anti-social behaviour, gangs and knife crime
  • Personal Finance
  • First Give Project

Year 9 topics include:

  • Mental health – anxiety, depression and stress
  • Alcohol, drugs and smoking
  • E-safety
  • The Media – body image, relationships, stereotypes, social media
  • Relationships and Sex Education
  • World Issues – poverty, conflict, terrorism, refugees, human rights
  • Anti-social behaviour and knife crime 

Year 10 topics include:

  • Social justice and human rights
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Mental health
  • Body image
  • E-safety
  • Relationships and Sex Education
  • Family and parenthood
  • Peace and conflict

Year 11 topics include:

  • Anti-social behaviour and crime
  • Alcohol, drugs and smoking
  • Relationships and Sex Education

Extracurricular and Enrichment Opportunities

PSHCE has many extracurricular and enrichment opportunities for our learners. We have many events that take place within school that are catered to the needs of GCSE learners such as guest speakers and events that help learners with revision and study skills. In Year 10 all learners will go on work experience which allows them to gain real life workplace experience. Career and further education advice is available for all learners and we work rigorously with learners to aid them in making choices for their futures. There are many enrichment projects that all learners at UBHS can get involved in some of this has included e-safety projects, restart a heart day, anti-bullying week, More In Common projects and Mosaic Community Arts project.
