Mathematics is the study of number, space, structure and change. Learners studying Mathematics develop highly important skills based around the ability to recognise and manipulate patterns. Mathematical skills such as problem solving are used in almost everyone’s professional and/or personal lives. Furthermore, they are core to many professions, for instance, those in engineering, science, finance, insurance, accountancy, banking, design, architecture, computing and economics. Employers, colleges and universities place a high value on mathematical and numerical skills and learner attainment in Mathematics is a strong predictor of career success. 

Outline of Course Content

Year 7 Topics Include

  • Using and working with numbers, decimals, fractions and percentages
  • Algebra; Sequences, formulas and expressions and equations.
  • Statistics; Using and interpreting Data and probability.
  • Geometry; Using angles, symmetry, perimeter, area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes.

Year 8 Topics Include

  • Drawing graphs.
  • Simplifying numbers.
  • Congruence and scaling.
  • Proportion.
  • Circles.

Year 9, 10 and 11

All learners start their GCSE’s in year 9 and cover the six main topics.

  • Number   
  • Algebra 
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rate of Change
  • Geometry 
  • Probability 
  • Statistics

Course Breakdown

All areas are equally weighted and will be represented on the final examination at the end of Year 11. The Mathematics department currently study the Edexcel and OCR exam board.

Learners will follow one of two pathways during years 10 and 11. The foundation pathway allows learners to achieve a grade 5-1, whilst the higher pathway will allow learners to obtain a grade 9-4.

As a department we focus on which pathway is most suited to each individual. It is very important learners understand their pathway as this could have an influence on any further education courses wishing to be undertaken.

There are currently no requirements to complete coursework for Mathematics. 

Extracurricular and Enrichment Opportunities

The Mathematics department prides itself on the opportunities it provides for all learners to achieve their potential. Every learner can attend structured after school classes each Thursday 3-4pm. Here learners are encouraged to further their knowledge by practicing methods learnt during lessons. We use a range of revision techniques encouraging learners to work in groups and on an individual basis. Learners are also encouraged to attend dinner time classes within the department.

The department recommends the use of and Mathswatch vle for revision. This site offers online assistance in the form of prepared lessons. Revision guides and scientific calculators are also available at a discounted price.
