Business Studies

Overview

What does a young man need to get ahead in business and become tomorrow’s successful business analyst, accountant, marketing manager or entrepreneur? The fast pace of change in the global economies means there will be ever increasing opportunities for our learners to succeed, if we equip them with the business skills and qualities that future employers seek.

Here at UBHS the Business Studies Curriculum provides a practical, real world experience where our young learners develop a broad range of essential work related knowledge and skills that future employers will value. In particular, the business skills learners will develop that are valued by employers include: 

  • Higher level thinking skills for analysis and evaluation
  • Effective leadership and team player skills
  • Confidence in business communication and presentation
  • Good Application of Literacy and Numeracy skills
  • Confident use of Enterprise skills and business planning

Year 9 

Students follow a Non- examined BTEC Work Skills program which covers units on:

  • Personal Finance and budgeting
  • Enterprise Skills and business planning
  • Career planning and preparing for employment
  • Customer service and the customer experience

KS4

Students follow a BTEC First Level 1/Level 2 Award in Business. This vocational qualification provides a practical, real-world approach to learning and develops specific business knowledge and understanding that learners need today to operate successfully in the business sector.

The BTEC First Award comprises of 4 Units:

  • Enterprise in the Business World Assessed via Portfolio Evidence
  • Finance for Business Assessed via Online Examination
  • Introducing Retail Business Assessed via Portfolio Evidence
  • Promoting a Brand Assessed via Portfolio Evidence

To support the progress of our learners the Department offers a variety of interesting off-site business experiences. These have included visits and tours to:

  • Jaguar Landrover - Birmingham
  • Coca Cola Enterprises Wakefield
  • Cadbury world - Bourneville
  • Manchester Airport
  • Retail venue Birstall Retail Park
  • White Rose Shopping Centre.

We also encourage interaction with business personnel where possible and have benefited from working with City Veteran and former Chief executive at Asda  and Chairman of Royal Mail - Allan Leighton.
